Berdj Tchakerian is a retired government lawyer and federal prosecutor from Melbourne, Australia. He has significantly contributed to his community both professionally and through volunteer work. Born in Ethiopia in 1963, Berdj’s journey to Australia began in the vibrant Armenian community of Addis Ababa, where he spent a joyful childhood until political upheaval in 1974 prompted his family to emigrate. After spending time in Lebanon and England, Berdj and his family settled in Melbourne in 1976.
Adjusting to a new culture and language posed challenges during his high school years, but Berdj found his stride by focusing on humanities subjects, which led him to pursue an arts degree followed by a law degree at Monash University. His legal career began in earnest with a six-month contract at the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions, a role that blossomed into a 37-year tenure. Specializing in criminal law, Berdj handled cases ranging from tax fraud to drug importation, and later advanced to senior management roles.
Berdj’s commitment to public service extends beyond his professional life. He has been an active member of the Armenian General Benevolent Union (AGBU) Melbourne chapter, inspired by his mother’s leadership within the organization. His involvement deepened following a transformative trip to Armenia in 1988, which reinforced his dedication to his Armenian heritage. Berdj has also contributed to community radio and continues to support various Armenian cultural and educational initiatives.
Now retired, Berdj remains passionate about fostering a united and resilient Armenian diaspora. He envisions a future where Armenian communities worldwide maintain their cultural ties and actively contribute to the development of Armenia. His advice to young professionals emphasizes the importance of seizing new opportunities, remaining passionate, and staying connected to one’s roots, values that have guided his own remarkable journey.
